THE HERDS
The Iberian Pig forms the largest of the herds reared on the estate, though there is also a group of Charolesas and Limousines cows, helping to maintain the natural development and sustainability of the pasture’s ecosystem. The Iberian sow reaches reproductive age at about eight to ten months, placing the fertility rate at around 80% of the herd and each litter is normally of around seven or nine piglets. Each sow has a breeding life of about four to five years.
The weight of the pigs at birth is roughly 1.1 to 1.5 kg. During the first 15 days they are fed exclusively by their mother, after which they receive a nourishing supplement based on a concentrated fodder that helps them to grow and prepares them for the next phase of maturity.
Grazing takes place in the meadow and consists of walking amongst the oak and blockhead forests. The animals begin by traversing the higher zones, gradually descending towards the lowest levels of the pasture. The duration of the grazing period is generally from around the beginning of October through to the last days of March, although this can depend upon the quantity and availability of acorns throughout the estate that year.
